Stephen Kijak was born in 1969 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He studied with renowned film scholar (and Cassavetes expert) Ray Carney and the late, great Mel Howard at Boston University's College of Communication. He wrote, directed and produced his debut feature film NEVER MET PICASSO in 1996 which starred Margot Kidder, Alexis Arquette, and Don McKellar (with music by Kristin Hersh.) The film won two grand jury prizes at OutFest 97 (Best Screenplay and Best Actor).

The highly acclaimed documentary CINEMANIA followed in 2002 (Co-directing/co-producing with German filmmaker Angela Christlieb.) A portrait of five of NYC's most manic-obsessive film-buffs, the film played over 50 international film festivals including Rotterdam, Locarno, Tribeca, Edinburgh and won Best Documentary at the Hamptons International Film Festival. It was released theatrically in the US, Germany and the UK and sold internationally by Wellspring.

His most recent film, the feature documentary SCOTT WALKER — 30 CENTURY MAN debuted internationally at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2007 and went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed documentaries released in the UK that year. It was honored with a BAFTA nomination (for producer Mia Bays), placed at #13 on Time Out London's list of the 50 Greatest Music Films Ever and was named "Documentary of the Year" by The Irish Times. Executive produced by David Bowie, the film tells the story of one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in rock history and features such luminaries as Brian Eno, Radiohead, Sting, Jarvis Cocker and Damon Albarn. To date, the film has been released in the UK, Spain, Australia, Israel and soon, the US.

In TV, Kijak directed episodes of the hit Bravo reality series Queer Eye. He currently resides in Los Angeles and is teaming up once again with his Oscar-winning producing partner Mia Bays of Missing in Action Films, as well as producer Holly Becker ("You Me and Everyone We Know") on a new narrative feature.
